City Council Considers Controversial Variances for New Home

In a recent city council meeting, discussions centered around a proposed project at 201 Short Street, where the applicant seeks variances to demolish existing structures and construct a new single-family home. The applicant plans to build a two-story house with a garage and a pool, but the site is constrained by state-imposed stream buffers—25 feet for undisturbed areas and 75 feet for impervious surfaces. The Planning Commission has recommended partial approval of the project, allowing for certain encroachments while limiting new construction within the buffers. Specifically, they propose that no new structures be built in the 50-foot buffer and that any new construction in the 75-foot setback be capped at 850 square feet.

Additionally, the applicant is required to donate 10 feet of right-of-way for future improvements to Short Street. The council is expected to deliberate on these recommendations, balancing the need for development with environmental protections.
