Young archer overcomes adversity to chase Paralympic dream

A young archer from Cedar Park is set to make history as the youngest member of Team USA at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. At just 15 years old, the athlete, who has faced significant challenges due to a leg length discrepancy and over 20 surgeries, shared their inspiring journey during a recent government meeting.

The archer began their journey in the sport four years ago at the Twin Lakes YMCA, initially seeking an individual activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. They quickly fell in love with target archery, appreciating that success in the sport relies on dedication rather than physical strength. After competing locally for two years, they transitioned to Olympic recurve archery, taking a year off to refine their skills with a new coach.

Despite undergoing surgery last summer that required a six-month recovery, the young athlete remained committed to their goal of competing in the Paralympics. They resumed practice just a week post-surgery and gained valuable competition experience, ultimately securing a spot in Paris by outperforming the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic gold medalist during trials.

However, the journey has not been without its hurdles. The archer is currently unfunded and unsponsored, with their family covering all expenses related to their Paralympic preparation. Due to their age, they are restricted from utilizing certain fundraising platforms available to older athletes. Nevertheless, a community-driven GoFundMe campaign has garnered significant support, although they are still working towards their financial goal.

With determination and resilience, this young athlete is poised to represent not only Team USA but also inspire others facing similar challenges as they embark on their Paralympic journey.
