City Council Approves Alcohol Sales Near Schools Amid Controversy

The Mansfield City Council convened on Wednesday evening, beginning with an invocation led by Pastor Rusty George of Crossroads Church, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. The meeting included a segment for citizen comments, although no residents signed up to speak.

During the session, the council approved a variance allowing BBQ Chicken to serve alcoholic beverages at its location on East Broad Street, despite being within 300 feet of Mansfield High School and Mary Orr Intermediate School. This decision follows previous approvals for similar establishments in the area.

The council also held a public hearing regarding the creation of Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) Number 5, which encompasses approximately 70.89 acres of land. This zone is intended to facilitate development in conjunction with the Hanover project at The Villages at Southpointe. The council will review a draft project and finance plan at a future meeting.

In new business, the council approved an economic development agreement with Infinity Sound Limited, which is relocating its headquarters to Mansfield. The company plans to invest $3.6 million in a new 23,000 square foot facility, creating at least 55 jobs in various roles. The agreement includes a request for $200,000 to support fire suppression infrastructure.

Additionally, the council authorized a contract with Crossland Construction Company for preconstruction services related to the relocation of Fire Station 1, with a budget not to exceed $20,000.
