New facility aims to empower special needs youth and adults

In a recent planning commission meeting, Tiono Malachi presented a proposal for a new facility aimed at providing day programs for special needs adults and youth. The facility is expected to accommodate approximately 50 to 60 clients daily, with a staff-to-client ratio of 1 to 8, adhering to established guidelines.

The proposed program will operate in two segments: adult day care services during the day and after-school programs for middle and high school students in the afternoon. Activities will include community outings as well as on-site engagement in arts and crafts, gaming, and life skills training. The facility will operate from 9 AM to 3 PM for day programs, with after-school services running until 7:30 PM.

Parking logistics were also discussed, with the facility requiring 16 of the 39 total parking stalls for staff and client transportation. Malachi emphasized the importance of community integration for clients, noting that while many will participate in external activities, there will be provisions for those who prefer to remain at the facility.

The application for a temporary license has been submitted to the state, with an inspection anticipated within the next two weeks. The planning commission expressed support for the initiative, recognizing its potential to enhance services for individuals with special needs in the community.
