Schools Champion Kindness with Innovative Student Programs

During a recent school board meeting, officials highlighted the success of the Kindness Clubs at Sunset View Elementary and Dixon Middle School, emphasizing their role in fostering a positive school culture. Assistant Superintendent Alex Jeter opened the discussion, praising the integral contributions of social workers in promoting kindness initiatives within the schools.

Jeter noted that the Kindness Clubs have been embedded in the elementary schools for several years, culminating in an annual kindness retreat where students receive training to implement kindness principles back at their schools. This year marked the introduction of a similar retreat for secondary students, further expanding the initiative.

Chris Chilcote, representing Sunset View, shared insights into the school's Kindness Club, which has been active for seven years. He reported that over 500 students participate in kindness activities, including a special Kindness Week each November. The club encourages students to engage in monthly kindness activities and recognizes outstanding contributions through a \"Kindness Student of the Month\" program.

At Dixon Middle School, Tommy Hershey detailed the structure of their Kindness Club, which consists of approximately 60 students divided into smaller groups. The club focuses on teaching respect and includes initiatives such as writing thank-you notes to teachers and welcoming new students through guided tours and monthly breakfasts. Hershey emphasized the positive impact of these activities on new students, helping them integrate into the school community more quickly.

Both presenters received commendations from board members for their efforts in creating a supportive and inclusive environment. The meeting concluded with a call for public input, reflecting the board's commitment to community engagement in educational initiatives.
