Residents Raise Concerns Over Controversial Development Plans

During a recent government meeting, community members voiced significant concerns regarding a proposed development project at 57 Hooker Avenue. Resident Mike Harman highlighted that while the project's height has been reduced, its overall environmental impact remains a pressing issue. He pointed out that the new U-shaped design increases the surface area by 61%, bringing it closer to neighboring properties. Harman questioned the adequacy of screening measures and raised concerns about the extensive excavation required for parking spaces, estimating that over 23 feet of solid rock would need to be removed without any blasting, which he appreciated.

Harman also inquired about the environmental implications of the construction process, including potential vibrations affecting adjacent homes, as well as noise, dust, and fumes. He emphasized that the current building application and environmental assessment documents do not reflect the new design, suggesting that the city should require updated submissions for such significant changes.

Another resident, Amanda Thornton, representing Dwight Street, urged that the visual impact of the project from her street be accurately represented in photographic simulations. She stressed the importance of considering the views from all surrounding areas, particularly given the historic nature of her neighborhood.

The meeting concluded with officials acknowledging the need for further updates and public input. The public hearing remains open, with plans to post engineering comments and allow for additional community feedback before the next meeting scheduled for July 23rd. The officials encouraged residents to submit their comments in a consolidated manner to ensure they are adequately reviewed.
