Construction Delays Hit Major School Projects Amid Concrete Shortage

During a recent government meeting, officials provided updates on ongoing construction projects, highlighting challenges and progress at various sites. The construction of the Tempview facility is currently facing delays due to issues with concrete supply. A local concrete plant has experienced multiple breakdowns, significantly reducing the daily concrete pouring capacity from the desired 100 yards to between 10 and 50 yards. Fortunately, financial implications have been mitigated as contractors have committed to maintaining current pricing despite the setbacks.

In addition to the concrete challenges, the construction team is making strides with the installation of vertical block walls and the pouring of concrete floors for the academic wing of the Tempview project. All helical piers have been successfully installed, and the budget remains on track despite recent change orders.

At Wasatch, construction teams are focused on site preparation, including extensive dirt work and grading, as they evaluate whether to adjust the school’s design in relation to a nearby ditch. Similarly, Shoreline Middle School is undergoing demolition and site clearing, with plans to remove remnants of an old baseball field.

Concerns were raised about potential delays affecting the Shoreline and Wasatch projects due to the concrete supply issues at Tempview. However, contractors have reassured officials that they will be able to meet the concrete needs for these schools once the plant resumes full operations.

Looking ahead, groundbreaking for the Shoreline project is tentatively scheduled for September. Officials also discussed the challenges of communicating construction timelines to the community, noting that ongoing renovations in the neighborhood complicate efforts to provide accurate updates. They emphasized the importance of managing expectations, given the unpredictable nature of construction schedules.
