Community leaders demand action to restore local park safety

During a recent Kent County commissioners meeting, community members voiced pressing concerns regarding local parks and public safety. Juan Garcia, a Westside neighborhood resident and small business owner, highlighted the deteriorating conditions at Jumball Park, which he described as increasingly unsafe for families, particularly for children with mobility challenges. He expressed frustration over the park's maintenance, noting that excessive gravel and illegal parking have compromised the green spaces that once served as soccer fields for his children.

Garcia referenced a 1987 resolution from the Kent County Board of Commissioners, which emphasized the importance of maintaining John Ball Zoo and its surrounding park as quality neighborhood spaces. He argued that the zoo has failed to uphold its commitment to being a good neighbor, as the park has seen a decline in accessibility and safety for local families.

Another speaker, D. Jones, shared a positive experience involving local youth at a Detroit Lions facility but also raised concerns about funding allocation for community venues. He advocated for financial support for smaller venues, such as the Four Star Theater, which he believes could host significant events and contribute to the local economy.

The discussions underscored a growing demand for improved park facilities and community engagement, as residents seek to reclaim safe and accessible public spaces for families in Kent County.
