City saves $130000 through innovative internal budgeting strategies

During a recent government meeting, officials highlighted significant internal savings achieved through budgetary adjustments and operational efficiencies. The department reported a successful review of software expenditures, resulting in a $4,000 reduction in costs by eliminating unnecessary software subscriptions.

Additionally, the department has undertaken a major project to digitize thousands of files, including building permits and site plans. Since the beginning of 2023, they have scanned over 17,000 files, totaling more than 400,000 pages. This internal initiative has saved the city nearly $130,000 compared to hiring external consultants for the task.

Council member Souza raised questions regarding the allocation of $125,000 for a code rewrite, confirming it would be sourced from capital projects. Souza also inquired about the department's progress in transitioning credit card processing fees back to users. Officials indicated that while there has been progress in implementing fee collection across various departments, further discussions with finance personnel would be necessary for clarity on the overall strategy and expected revenue offsets.
