School board advances landmark LGBTQIA plus inclusion policy

During a recent government meeting, significant discussions centered around the implementation of a new policy aimed at fostering inclusivity for LGBTQIA+ students within the school district. Miss Harmon provided an overview of the Equity Center's sexual identity and gender-inclusive policy, highlighting a timeline of activities leading to its development.

On March 28, 2023, the school board of trustees passed resolution 2023-07, reaffirming their commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment for LGBTQIA+ students. This resolution mandated that the administration collaborate with LGBTQIA+ community members and staff to draft a policy that explicitly prohibits bullying and harassment based on sexual identity, in alignment with state and federal laws.

Throughout the previous school year, the district engaged in a series of sessions with LGBTQIA+ alliance groups, students, and local organizations to gather insights and feedback. These consultations were essential in providing historical context and expertise necessary for effectively supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. The district also sought guidance from the Midwest and Plains Equity and Assistance Center, which assisted in developing student voice sessions and curating relevant research and sample policies.
