Debate ignites over teen center versus community support

During a recent government meeting in Fitchburg, community members voiced their opinions on the proposal for a standalone teen center versus a broader community center. Sue Easter Day, a resident, argued against the idea of a dedicated teen center, suggesting that it could be a limiting approach. She emphasized the importance of family support during the challenging teenage years, advocating for a facility that caters to families rather than just teens. Easter Day proposed leasing existing space for community support instead of incurring the costs of constructing a new building.

Conversely, Sherif Otun, another resident and member of the board of review, expressed strong support for the teen center. He highlighted the positive impact the center could have on youth in the community, referencing his involvement with the EQT biodesign committee and a community engagement study that underscored the need for such a facility. Otun acknowledged that financial concerns were a significant factor in the ongoing discussions about the teen center's future.
