City plans major upgrades for safer pedestrian crossings

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed significant upgrades to pedestrian safety measures in the area, particularly the installation of new HAWK (High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk) signals. These signals, designed to enhance pedestrian crossings, will be added at two key locations: the Waystitch Trail Crossing and North Point Elementary School.

The Waystitch Trail Crossing, located just north of 300 North, will feature a HAWK signal that allows pedestrians and cyclists to activate stoplights, halting traffic for safe crossing. Similarly, a second HAWK signal will be installed on the south side of North Point Elementary, replacing the existing school crossing. The local school district has agreed to contribute funding for this initiative, highlighting a collaborative effort to improve student safety.

Despite the introduction of these signals, crossing guards will remain in place during peak school hours to assist students, ensuring an additional layer of safety. Officials emphasized that children will be encouraged to use the new signals by pressing the button to cross, with crossing guards available to help them navigate the road.

Additionally, the meeting addressed improvements to the roadway at 9th North Utah Highway, with a significant investment from the state aimed at widening and enhancing the crossing.

While the possibility of adding pedestrian islands was considered, officials ultimately decided against it due to safety concerns regarding pedestrians potentially being stranded in the roadway. The discussions reflect a proactive approach to pedestrian safety, particularly for schoolchildren, as the community continues to prioritize safe travel routes.
