City Council Considers Delay on School Levy Amid Recreation Plans

During a recent city council meeting, South Sound YMCA CEO Kyle Kronk addressed concerns regarding the potential impact of a proposed city bond for a new recreational facility on upcoming school levy efforts. Following the failure of a double school levy earlier this year, there is a strong likelihood that another levy attempt will be made in February 2025. Kronk expressed apprehension that the bond initiative, which includes plans for a swimming pool, could detract from the critical funding needed for local schools.

Kronk emphasized the importance of prioritizing educational services for students and the community, suggesting that delaying the bond process could provide an opportunity to explore alternative funding sources, such as establishing a metropolitan parks district. He also highlighted the need for improved communication and public engagement regarding these issues.

In response to Kronk's comments, Councilmember King Eiser proposed an amendment to the agenda to remove ordinance number 1118, which pertains to the bond proposal. The motion was seconded by Councilman Kaminski, and the council engaged in a brief discussion regarding the amendment. The meeting underscored the ongoing dialogue about balancing community recreational needs with educational funding priorities.
