City plans major developments amid power and water concerns

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed several key developments impacting the community, including potential new data center projects, updates to housing plans, and infrastructure improvements.

The meeting highlighted interest from developers in the Pole Canyon area, where they aim to establish data centers that reportedly use minimal water due to electric cooling systems. While these projects could create approximately 150 jobs, concerns were raised regarding the availability of power to support such operations. Officials noted that discussions with Rocky Mountain Power are necessary to assess power requirements, as current infrastructure may not suffice without significant investment.

In addition to the data center discussions, the council emphasized the urgency of updating the moderate income housing plan to comply with recent state code changes. This update is crucial for maintaining eligibility for state transportation funding. The Planning Commission is set to review these changes in a joint meeting scheduled for November 22, with further recommendations expected to be presented to the council on December 6.

Lastly, engineering updates included the commencement of test pumping at the White Hills well and efforts to rebid the drilling of well number 7, with a completion target set for the end of 2023.
