Community unites for vibrant Juneteenth celebrations and events

Mayor Edwards opened the discussion by reflecting on a successful Juneteenth celebration held at Riverwalk Park, which featured food, fellowship, and a vibrant atmosphere. He announced that another Juneteenth event is scheduled for the following evening, promising a free concert by the North Carolina Symphony, with tickets still available online.

In a move to enhance community participation, the Civic Affairs Committee is set to hold a special work session on June 27 to review the civic index. This initiative aims to gather broader input from residents regarding key issues such as civility, race relations, and representation in local governance. The committee plans to make the civic index more accessible online, encouraging residents of Onslow County to share their experiences and visions for the future.

The meeting also included heartfelt condolences from council members for the late Larry Denning, a respected local business leader and former Chamber of Commerce president.

Councilman Wright expressed pride in the achievements of local high school students, particularly the Jacksonville High School Girls Soccer Team, who were recognized for their state championship victory. He also congratulated over 1,400 graduates from various local high schools, emphasizing the community's support for their future endeavors.
