City Council Deliberates Controversial Beer License Approval

In a recent city council meeting, discussions centered around the approval of an off-premise beer license for Demonti Enterprises LLC, operating as Urban Smokes. The proposed license would allow the retail sale of beer for consumption off the premises, similar to offerings at local grocery stores and gas stations.

The council reviewed the requirements for such licenses, noting that they must be located at least 300 feet from community locations like schools, churches, and parks. The proposed site for Urban Smokes meets this requirement, being over 1,300 feet away from the nearest church. Currently, the city has a cap of one off-premise beer license per 1,000 residents, with an estimated population of 51,000, allowing for a total of 51 licenses. Presently, 22 licenses are active, leaving room for 29 more.

During the meeting, council members raised concerns regarding potential traffic impacts associated with the new business. The applicant, who operates a drive-through service, asserted that their business would not interfere with traffic flow, as it has a separate route from other establishments. However, some council members expressed the need for further analysis on traffic and access before making a decision.

After a motion to approve the license failed to receive a second, a council member proposed to continue the discussion for further deliberation. The motion to continue was approved with a 4-1 vote, meaning the matter will be revisited at the next scheduled city council meeting. This decision allows for additional consideration of the implications for adjacent businesses and community impact before a final ruling is made.
