Teachers urge swift action to secure fair contracts

During a recent school board meeting, concerns were raised regarding the ongoing contract negotiations between the district and the Wallingford-Swarthmore Education Association (WSEA). Community member John Perlman emphasized the critical role teachers play beyond their contractual obligations, highlighting their involvement in student support, college recommendations, and extracurricular activities. He urged the school board to expedite negotiations, stressing the importance of retaining high-quality educators and the risks associated with delaying the bargaining process.

Perlman called for a meeting before the school year begins, expressing hope for a positive announcement regarding a tentative agreement. He also requested transparency from the board about the reasons for any delays in reaching an agreement.

Another speaker, Siri Sharpless, echoed Perlman's sentiments, sharing concerns about the district's guidance counseling situation. He pointed out that a single counselor is currently responsible for writing all student recommendations, which could dilute the effectiveness of college applications, especially in a test-optional environment. Sharpless criticized the leadership within the guidance department, suggesting that the current structure may not adequately support students during a crucial time in their academic careers.

The discussions underscored the urgency for the school board to address both the contract negotiations and the operational challenges within the guidance department to ensure that students receive the support they need as they prepare for college.
