City Council Approves Controversial Speed Limit Changes

In a recent Draper City Council meeting, discussions centered on two significant action items: the approval of a resolution related to eminent domain and an ordinance amending speed limits on local roads.

The council addressed the contentious issue of eminent domain, specifically regarding a property owner affected by a condemnation act. Although the property owner was not present to voice concerns, council members expressed their reservations about the use of eminent domain. Council member Lowery motioned to approve Resolution 22-32, aimed at improving a chronically congested intersection. Despite their discomfort with eminent domain, several council members acknowledged the necessity of the resolution to alleviate traffic issues frequently raised by residents.

The second major topic was Ordinance 1546, which proposes changes to the Draper City Municipal Code concerning speed limits and road usage. Scott Cooley, a staff member, presented findings from studies indicating that the proposed changes are essential for safety, particularly on Traverse Ridge, where speeding and heavy truck traffic have raised concerns. The ordinance would lower the speed limit to 25 miles per hour between Suncrest and Highland Drive and restrict trucks with three axles or more from traveling downhill on Traverse Ridge. Exemptions would apply to emergency vehicles, city-operated vehicles, school buses, and public utility vehicles.
