City outlines ambitious plans for new parks and trails

During a recent city council meeting, officials provided updates on various community projects, highlighting significant progress in local infrastructure and recreational facilities.

The mayor began by discussing completed projects, including the installation of a new fence at the skate park and the widening of four bridges in Corn Canyon, which now feature wider trusses for improved accessibility. The mayor also noted the completion of a loop trail that will connect Draper City to Lehi, creating a 10-mile recreational loop that is expected to enhance outdoor activities in the area.

In addition to completed projects, the council addressed ongoing developments, particularly in park facilities. Four new playgrounds are set to be installed in the fall, with delays attributed to supply chain issues. The mayor expressed optimism about the progress at Draper Park, where the final concrete pour for the playground is scheduled, alongside the installation of rubber surfacing.

The council also discussed future projects, including a proposed trailhead with amenities such as restrooms and picnic shelters, aimed at improving access to outdoor spaces. The design phase for this project is already underway, with plans to incorporate an off-leash dog area and multi-use trails.

Traffic enforcement was another key topic, with the police chief reporting a 112% increase in citations compared to the previous year. The council acknowledged ongoing concerns about traffic safety and discussed the need for potential ordinances regarding the use of golf carts and electric bikes on sidewalks.

Lastly, the council reviewed House Bill 462, which mandates updates to the city’s general plan for moderate income housing. The council is required to select strategies from a new list to qualify for transportation funding, with discussions ongoing about the most effective approaches to implement.

The meeting concluded with a motion to enter a closed session to discuss litigation matters, reflecting the council's commitment to addressing both community development and legal responsibilities.
