Mayor Welch champions Rays future with bold redevelopment plan

In a recent government meeting, discussions centered on the future of the Tampa Bay Rays and the redevelopment of the Tropicana Field site in St. Petersburg. Mayor Welch emphasized the importance of collaboration and the lengthy process that has led to the current state of affairs regarding the city's waterfront ballpark discussions, which date back to 2008.

The redevelopment of the historic Gas Plant area has been a topic of conversation for over eight years, with significant milestones including a community input session initiated in July 2016 and the issuance of a Request for Proposals (RFP) in 2020. Notably, a resolution passed unanimously by the City Council in April 2021 mandated that no agreements with a master developer be made until the future of the Rays was clarified.

Mayor Welch has taken proactive steps to restart the redevelopment process, ensuring it aligns with the evolving needs of St. Petersburg's residents. A new RFP has been developed, incorporating feedback from four community conversations and outlining 23 guiding principles. These principles focus on economic equity, inclusion, affordable housing, job creation, and community connection, reflecting the city's commitment to a redevelopment plan that benefits all stakeholders involved.
