City officials probe historic cemetery for potential remains

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the ongoing development project at the historic gas plant site, emphasizing the importance of design policy and storytelling in the programming of the area. The project aims to honor the descendants of those associated with the historic gas plant, with visuals expected to be released pending approval.

A significant concern raised during the meeting was the potential presence of remains at the site, particularly in relation to the former Oak Lawn cemetery. Council members questioned whether adequate measures had been taken to respect and honor any individuals who may be buried there. In response, Brian Caper, the economic and workforce development director, provided an update on the ongoing studies being conducted.

Caper explained that the city is utilizing expanded ground penetrating radar to analyze the area, which previously identified four locations of disturbance that could indicate the presence of remains. The next phase involves ground truthing, where excavation will occur to verify the findings and assess whether these disturbances correlate with human remains. This approach aims to ensure that any historical significance of the site is thoroughly respected and addressed as the project moves forward.
