Senior housing project aims to meet booming demand

In a recent government meeting, representatives from Belmont Village and Greystar presented their proposal for a new senior housing project in San Rafael, emphasizing the growing need for such facilities due to demographic shifts. Andy Gerber, a representative from Belmont Village, highlighted the significant increase in the senior population, particularly those aged 75 and older, which is projected to rise by approximately 4,000 individuals in the coming years.

Gerber explained that the decision to pivot the use of the property to senior housing is driven by the aging baby boomer population, which is beginning to retire. He noted that in urbanized Marin County, there are currently around 27,000 residents aged 75 and over, underscoring the urgent demand for senior living options in the area.

The meeting concluded with a request for approval of a use permit for the project, which Gerber and his team believe will address the needs of the growing senior demographic. The proposal received support from local officials, who acknowledged the importance of providing adequate housing for the aging population.
