Coast Guard Commandant vows transparency in sexual assault crisis

In a recent government meeting, significant concerns were raised regarding the handling of sexual assault cases within the Coast Guard, particularly those that occurred between 2014 and 2022. The Commandant, who has been in the role for 13 months, acknowledged the failures of the past, particularly the lack of transparency and communication with Congress regarding these issues.

The Commandant emphasized the need for an Inspector General (IG) inspection to thoroughly investigate the problems that have persisted within the organization. He expressed a commitment to transparency and accountability, stating that a 90-day review has been initiated to assess the cultural factors that have contributed to a permissive environment for sexual misconduct, harassment, and retaliation.

The discussion highlighted a critical need for reform within the Coast Guard, as the Commandant recognized that the mishandling of legacy sexual assault cases at the Coast Guard Academy reflects broader systemic issues.
