Discharging millions in uncollectible taxes sparks debate

In a recent government meeting, Butte County officials discussed the continuation of a vital program aimed at supporting children and families in need. The program, which has been operational for over 25 years, focuses on providing local services to prevent children from being placed in Short Term Residential Treatment Facilities (STRTPs). The board approved a one-year contract for the program, with a budget not exceeding $3,490,000.

During the meeting, Assistant Treasurer Tax Collector Kylie Patterson presented a request to discharge accountability for unsecured taxes from 2012 and earlier, totaling approximately $2 million. This decision does not eliminate the obligation for these debts but allows staff to redirect their efforts toward collecting remaining accounts. Patterson highlighted that while the amount may seem substantial, it reflects ongoing challenges in tax collection, with over $1 million becoming delinquent annually from a total of $17 million in unsecured tax bills issued this year.

The board's discussions underscored the importance of local support systems for families and the ongoing efforts to manage tax collection effectively. The meeting concluded without public comments, and the board unanimously passed the proposed measures.
