Rockdale County students secure 37 million in scholarships

During a recent government meeting, officials presented preliminary scholarship award amounts for the class of 2024, totaling approximately $37.2 million. This figure includes various types of scholarships, such as HOPE, fine arts, athletic, and merit scholarships, with Rockdale High School's magnet program receiving the largest share at $15 million.

The discussion highlighted a notable decline in the number of Zell Miller Scholars, attributed to fewer students taking the SAT and ACT due to optional testing policies. This year, the district saw a decrease in Zell Miller Scholars, as eligibility requires specific test scores. In contrast, the number of HOPE Scholars increased, although officials acknowledged the need for enhanced academic advisement to support students in meeting scholarship criteria.

The meeting also addressed the district's initiatives to boost scholarship opportunities, including partnerships with colleges and hosting scholarship fairs. Notably, students received over $1 million in scholarships at the Infinite College scholarship fair. Additionally, the district is implementing strategies to encourage students to take standardized tests, as future admissions policies will require them.

Counselors' workloads were discussed, revealing that caseloads often exceed 650 students, which impacts their ability to provide adequate support. The need for additional counselors and college advisers was emphasized to improve student outcomes in scholarship acquisition and post-secondary planning.

Looking ahead, the district plans to continue its efforts to secure scholarships and enhance student support, including meetings with college representatives and financial aid nights. The overall goal remains to increase the number of students pursuing higher education and vocational training, with a focus on addressing the barriers some students face in accessing these opportunities.
