Mayor declares Elder Abuse Awareness Day to protect vulnerable citizens

During a recent government meeting, Florence Mayor Andrew Betterton announced the proclamation of National Waste and Recycling Workers Week, scheduled for June 16-22, 2024. He urged residents to express gratitude towards the sanitation workers who play a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the community. Betterton highlighted the positive feedback received about the dedication and friendliness of these employees, emphasizing the importance of their work.

Additionally, the mayor proclaimed June 15, 2024, as Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Florence, in collaboration with the Lauderdale County Department of Human Resources. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the increasing issues of abuse, neglect, and exploitation faced by seniors and individuals with disabilities. Betterton noted that the Alabama Department of Human Resources reported over 12,000 cases of such maltreatment in the previous fiscal year, underscoring the need for community vigilance and support for vulnerable populations.

Tara Smith, a representative from the Alabama Department of Human Resources, echoed the mayor's sentiments, encouraging community members to report any instances of abuse or neglect they may encounter. She reaffirmed the commitment of the Adult Protective Services Division to protect and serve the elderly and disabled residents of Lauderdale County. The meeting served as a platform to promote community awareness and collective responsibility towards safeguarding the well-being of these individuals.
