Funding gap threatens completion of crucial Modoc Trail project

During a recent government meeting, discussions centered on budget adjustments and updates on significant community projects, particularly the Modoc Trail, a vital bike path in the South Coast region.

The meeting began with an announcement regarding the incorporation of a new funding source into the department's adopted budget through a final budget adjustment. It was noted that the community resources and public facilities functional group did not submit any budget expansion requests.

Supervisor Capps then requested an update from the new public works director, Mr. Sennin, specifically about the Modoc Trail. This trail is recognized for its importance in connecting various cities and unincorporated areas within the county. Mr. Sennin highlighted ongoing efforts to acquire a right-of-way on property owned by the Coomer Water Company, which is also part of a Santa Barbara Land Trust preserve. However, this acquisition has prompted requests for significant changes to the project, leading to an estimated funding gap of approximately $700,000.

In light of this new information, Mr. Sennin urged the board to consider allocating funds from the South Coast trail budget to bridge this gap and complete the project. Supervisor Nelson expressed his support for the funding request, contingent on the backing of other South Coast colleagues.

The meeting underscored the board's commitment to enhancing community infrastructure while navigating budgetary constraints and project complexities.
