Community leaders demand urgent action to combat wildfire threat

During a recent government meeting, community members voiced urgent concerns regarding fire safety and the need for increased resources to combat brush overgrowth in Tuolumne County. Jerry, a representative from the Greenlee Oaks Firewise Group, highlighted the escalating fire risks, citing recent incidents like the Arrow Fire, which rapidly expanded from 1,000 to over 5,000 acres, and the Coral Fire, which consumed 21,000 acres in just 24 hours. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in fire prevention efforts and called for additional resources to assist local residents in clearing brush and maintaining defensible space around their homes.

Jay Graham, another community member, echoed Jerry's sentiments, urging the Board of Supervisors to allocate more funding towards fire suppression initiatives. He suggested exploring the possibility of utilizing private crews or volunteers to assist with clearing efforts on county property, while acknowledging the potential liability issues that would need to be addressed.

In a separate but equally important discussion, a participant reminded attendees that June 18th marked the International Day of Countering Hate Speech, urging the community to foster a respectful and inclusive environment during meetings and beyond.
