City Council Approves Controversial Alley Vacations

During a recent government meeting, the Hastings City Council unanimously approved two ordinances concerning the vacating and conveyance of a portion of a 14-foot alley adjacent to lots six and seven in block 13. The council voted eight to zero on both measures, reflecting a consensus on the necessity of these actions.

The first ordinance, numbered 4764, was introduced to vacate the alley while retaining city ownership. This step was prompted by a property owner's request to split their property into two lots, revealing that part of the alley had not been vacated. The alley's limited utility was noted during discussions, with council members acknowledging its minimal presence.

Following the initial approval, the council moved swiftly to suspend the rules for a second and final reading of the ordinance, which also passed unanimously. The second ordinance, numbered 4763, authorizes the conveyance of the vacated alley to the property owner for a fee of $150, consistent with the city's fee schedule.
