Architects unveil ambitious renovation plan for historic home

In a recent government meeting, significant discussions centered around a proposed renovation project for a historic property, highlighting both preservation efforts and modern enhancements. The project aims to transform the existing structure, a two-story wood frame house built in 1925, while maintaining its architectural integrity.

The proposal includes the demolition of an outdated pool and the preservation of a detached two-story structure at the rear of the property. A key feature of the redesign is the introduction of a true courtyard, complete with a fountain and entertaining area, which replaces the previously planned drive court. The driveway will be relocated to the side of the property to accommodate this new layout.

The project team emphasized their commitment to preserving the historic character of the main structure, which they described as being in remarkably good condition compared to other homes of its age in the neighborhood. They plan to replace existing windows with impact-resistant options and install a new roof that matches the original Spanish mission style.

During the meeting, the team requested a historic exception for a side setback, proposing to maintain an 8-foot distance instead of the required 10 feet. Additionally, they sought permission to slightly increase the floor area ratio from 0.43 to 0.46, citing the inclusion of green features as justification for this request.

The proposed design aligns with the surrounding streetscape, which features similar Mediterranean-style homes. The project aims to enhance the property while respecting its historical significance, ensuring that the renovations contribute positively to the neighborhood's aesthetic and cultural heritage.
