Rockville declares June as Pride and Gun Violence Awareness Month

In a recent government meeting, the Rockville City Council celebrated significant community initiatives, including the proclamation of June 2024 as LGBTQ+ Bridal Month and National Gun Violence Awareness Month.

The council unanimously supported the recognition of LGBTQ+ Bridal Month, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and safety within the community. The proclamation acknowledged the historical significance of the Stonewall riots and the ongoing efforts to promote visibility and equity for the LGBTQ+ community. Mayor and council members emphasized their commitment to ensuring equal treatment for all residents, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The Human Rights Commission expressed gratitude for the proclamation, reinforcing the message that the city embraces and celebrates its diverse community.

Additionally, the council declared June 7, 2024, as Gun Violence Awareness Day, marking a commitment to addressing the alarming rates of gun violence in Maryland. The proclamation noted that Maryland has one of the highest rates of gun homicides and assaults in the nation, with guns being the leading cause of death among children and teens. Local events will be held to honor victims of gun violence and raise awareness about the issue. Representatives from Moms Demand Action for Gun Violence attended the meeting, expressing appreciation for the city's recognition of the need for change and community safety.

The meeting also included a proclamation for Men's Health Week, scheduled for June 10-16, 2024. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of health screenings and healthy lifestyles for men, particularly in light of disparities in life expectancy among different ethnic groups. The council encouraged the community to support efforts promoting men's health awareness.
