During a recent government meeting, officials highlighted the critical role of the Meals on Wheels program in supporting senior citizens, particularly during the Easter holiday. Commissioner Jackson shared a personal experience volunteering at the Maplewood Senior Center in Taylor, emphasizing that for many seniors, these meal deliveries represent their only social interaction throughout the week. The emotional connections formed during these visits were noted as invaluable.
Commissioner Kometti echoed these sentiments, pointing out the loneliness faced by seniors and the importance of holiday meals provided by the Senior Alliance. Both commissioners stressed the need for increased volunteer participation to enhance these outreach efforts.
The meeting also addressed an amendment to a three-year agreement with the Senior Alliance, aimed at continuing the provision of liquid and halal meals to eligible seniors across 34 communities in Western Wayne County and Downriver areas. The amendment was prompted by additional federal and state funding, which will allow for expanded meal services.
The commissioners unanimously approved the funding amendment, recognizing the positive impact of the program on the community. The meeting concluded without public comments, and the session was adjourned shortly thereafter.
