Deputies save life with quick CPR and AED response

During a recent government meeting, Cooper City officials recognized Donna Waskowicz, the city's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program manager, for her outstanding contributions to public safety. Waskowicz was honored as the Broward Sheriff's Office Citizen of the Year, a recognition she will receive at an award ceremony on August 6 at Bailey Hall, Broward College. Her efforts include recruiting and training new CERT members, conducting CPR training, and providing instruction on the use of emergency medical equipment, such as stop the bleed kits and automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

The meeting also highlighted a recent life-saving incident involving local law enforcement and fire rescue personnel. On June 15, deputies responded to a cardiac arrest call and utilized an AED to deliver shocks to the patient, ultimately restoring a manageable heart rhythm. The patient was subsequently transported to the hospital and is currently recovering after bypass surgery. Officials credited the availability of AEDs in police vehicles as a critical factor in the successful outcome of the emergency response.

City officials expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of the police and fire departments, emphasizing the importance of community safety initiatives and the role of trained volunteers like Waskowicz in enhancing emergency preparedness.
