Moab declares International Dark Sky Week to protect night skies

During a recent government meeting in Moab, city officials approved several items on the consent agenda, including a proclamation for International Dark Sky Week, which will take place from April 2nd to 8th, 2024. Mayor Joette Langanese emphasized the importance of preserving dark skies, noting their ecological and health benefits, as well as their role in promoting astrotourism, which contributes to the local economy.

The proclamation highlighted the negative impacts of light pollution and the city's commitment to outdoor lighting ordinances that support dark sky preservation. Moab is recognized for its efforts in this area, having completed its application to become an international dark sky community, joining Utah's 25 certified locations.

In addition to the dark sky proclamation, the council approved the adoption of a resolution for new bank signatures, the minutes from previous meetings, and bills totaling $684,735.75 against the city. The consent agenda was unanimously approved, reflecting the council's commitment to both community engagement and environmental stewardship.
