Community leaders demand action to address homelessness crisis

During a recent government meeting, community members voiced their concerns and suggestions regarding homelessness and mental health resources in the Lehigh Valley. Dave Newton, a resident of Allentown, emphasized the need for clarity in local laws concerning the rights of homeless individuals, particularly regarding shelter in public areas. He shared his personal experiences with homelessness and urged officials to eliminate ambiguities in legislation to better support those in need.

Shati Flora, a former resident of Allentown and a member of several local coalitions, highlighted the importance of accessible mental health resources. Drawing from her own journey of recovery, she stressed that without addressing mental health, individuals struggle to maintain basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. Flora called for improvements in existing programs and the introduction of additional resources, particularly for underserved communities.

Laura Grace, who has experienced homelessness both as a child and an adult, advocated for proactive measures to protect the rights of homeless individuals. She pointed out the reactive nature of current government responses and urged for the establishment of clear rights to prevent violations, especially in light of trends in other regions where homelessness is criminalized.
