Homeless advocate exposes harsh realities and rising numbers

During a recent government meeting, a poignant testimony from a homeless individual highlighted the ongoing struggles faced by those without stable housing. The speaker, who identified as one of the homeless, expressed deep frustration over the treatment they and others receive from law enforcement, claiming that their rights are routinely violated. They described experiences of being harassed by police for simply resting in public spaces, emphasizing that many homeless individuals are not criminals but rather people trying to survive.

The speaker also pointed out the misconception that homelessness is synonymous with dirtiness, asserting that they and their peers often clean up litter left by others. They credited local organizations for providing crucial support, stating that without their help, they might not have survived the hardships of homelessness. The recent point-in-time count revealed an 86% increase in unsheltered individuals, highlighting a growing crisis.
