City Council Approves Major Lighting Project Amid Construction Concerns

The council is seeking approval to enter into a contract with Conexis Energy, which will also manage the maintenance and energy contracts for the city's lighting systems.

City officials noted that the project budget will be amended to accommodate this expense, increasing the total allocation from $2.7 million to $2.7 million plus the additional $78,000 for the lighting installation. The council members expressed their support for the project, with Councillor Nuland inquiring about alternative options for the lighting installation. City staff clarified that while Conexis is the primary electrical provider, the city could explore purchasing its own poles while still sourcing electricity from Conexis.

Additionally, the meeting addressed ongoing construction projects, particularly a roundabout that has raised concerns regarding its impact on emergency response times. Councillor Missolia highlighted feedback from residents about potential safety service disruptions due to the construction. City engineers assured the council that measures are in place to maintain adequate emergency response capabilities during the construction period, which is expected to last 90 days.

The council unanimously approved the motion to proceed with the lighting project and adjourned the meeting, indicating a commitment to enhancing city infrastructure while addressing public safety concerns.
