City Council Approves Controversial Variance Near Cemetery

In a recent Marco Island City Council meeting, officials discussed a variance petition concerning a property located at 588 Bald Eagle Drive. The petition seeks to reduce the required 15-foot buffer to just 3 feet along the south and west sides of the property, which borders a cemetery. Planning Manager Mary Holden presented the case, highlighting that the planning board had previously held a public hearing on June 7, where concerns about noise, light, and erosion were raised by community members.

The planning board ultimately voted 4-2 in favor of recommending the variance, citing findings and conditions outlined in the resolution. The council's discussion revealed that the proposed development would consist of a single-story structure, despite the property being zoned for a height of up to 75 feet. Council members clarified that their decision was limited to the setback variance and did not extend to denying the project itself.

Public comments during the planning board meeting primarily focused on preserving the tranquility of the adjacent cemetery, with residents expressing worries about potential disturbances from the new development. The applicant has offered to enhance landscaping on the cemetery side to mitigate concerns.
