Community board meeting sparks heated debate over bike lane proposal

During a recent community board meeting, discussions centered around the proposed installation of a bike lane on Pelham Parkway North, sparking significant debate among members. Community member Big Bill expressed support for the bike lane, while others raised concerns about the lack of community input in the decision-making process.

One member criticized the board for not adequately preparing for discussions, highlighting that the motion to send a letter to the Department of Transportation (DOT) regarding the bike lane was not thoroughly reviewed. This member emphasized the importance of community engagement, stating that decisions impacting residents should not be made without their input.

The meeting also addressed technical difficulties experienced by participants using the Webex platform, with suggestions made to consider switching to Zoom for better accessibility. Community member Kate Cardona voiced her frustrations about the challenges of attending meetings virtually, noting that sound issues and limited features hindered participation.

In addition to the bike lane discussions, a motion was passed to partner with Grassroots for another food insecurity event, following a successful initiative in August. This motion will be presented to the full board for approval in the upcoming meeting.

The meeting concluded with a call for improved communication and transparency within the board, as members acknowledged the need for better representation of community interests. The next meeting is scheduled for October, where further discussions on the bike lane and other community matters will continue.
