Belton city budget faces crucial revision after overspending

During a recent government meeting, officials in Belton addressed key administrative matters, including the annual readoption of the city's conflict of interest ordinance and a revision to the fiscal year 2024 budget.

The Missouri Ethics Commission mandates that municipalities with annual operating budgets exceeding $1 million must biannually readopt their conflict of interest ordinance. However, many municipalities, including Belton, opt for an annual readoption for simplicity. Belton's ordinance, originally adopted in 1991, is codified in Chapter Two of the Code of Ordinances. The motion to readopt the ordinance was unanimously approved by the council.

In addition, the council discussed Bill 2024-40, which proposes a revision to the city’s fiscal year 2024 budget. The revision comes after the Economic Development Fund exceeded its budget by $67,345 due to various economic development initiatives undertaken throughout the year. The motion to approve the first reading of the ordinance was also seconded and moved forward without opposition.
