Community demands action on dangerous intersection safety issues

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed several key topics, including infrastructure improvements and community safety concerns.

One significant agenda item was the authorization for the 2025 Municipal Aid Grant application, which has been submitted to the New Department of Transportation. This grant aims to fund the resurfacing of South Pleasant Avenue, specifically the section between East Ridgewood Avenue and Grove Street. This area, which connects to local schools, was last resurfaced in 2000. The proposal also includes the addition of bike lanes on both sides of South Pleasant Avenue, extending north to Somerville School, although some clarification on the wording of the resolution was noted.

Public comments highlighted community concerns, particularly regarding safety at the intersection of Hope Street and Spring Avenue. A resident raised alarms about the lack of crosswalks on Spring Avenue, which poses a danger to pedestrians, especially students heading to nearby schools. The resident emphasized that the absence of crosswalks leads to fast-moving traffic, making it difficult for individuals to cross safely.

Additionally, the resident inquired about the potential for an electronic shredding day, suggesting that the village consider offering this service every 18 months. They expressed frustration over not receiving a response regarding previous inquiries about this initiative.

The meeting concluded with a commitment from officials to address these community concerns and provide updates on the proposed services and safety measures.
