Ridgewood honors Gold Star families with luminary tribute

During a recent village council meeting, officials proclaimed September 29, 2024, as Gold Star Mothers and Family Day in Ridgewood, honoring the families of fallen military heroes. The proclamation highlighted the sacrifices made by service members and the resilience of their families, known as Gold Star Mothers and Families, who provide support to other veterans and their communities.

The council referenced the historical significance of the day, established by Congress in 1936 and later amended by President Barack Obama in 2011 to recognize all Gold Star family members. Residents are encouraged to participate in the observance by lighting luminaries at their homes on the evening of September 29, a tradition initiated by Marine parents to honor the memories of those who have served.

Additionally, the village noted the installation of a Gold Star Monument in Van Ness Square, further solidifying Ridgewood's commitment to recognizing the sacrifices of military families. The council's proclamation serves as a call to action for the community to come together in remembrance and support of those who have lost loved ones in service to the nation.
