Town council votes to repeal sales tax and eliminate debt

During a recent town council meeting, Finance Director Scott McCarty presented a proposal to repeal the town center sales tax, a measure that has been in place since 2007. The tax was initially implemented to fund infrastructure and maintenance for the development of the town center area, specifically targeting locations such as the Target and Walmart centers.

McCarty highlighted that the council had previously expressed interest in eliminating the tax during budget discussions earlier this year. If approved, the repeal would take effect on October 1, following a mandatory 30-day waiting period after the public hearing. The council is required to notify the state Department of Revenue and local businesses about the change.

In addition to the tax repeal, McCarty announced plans to use approximately $2.6 million accumulated from the tax fund to pay off existing debt. He also noted that around $900,000 would remain after the account is closed, which will be addressed in the development of the 2025-2026 budget. The council will decide how to allocate these remaining funds, potentially for new projects or initiatives.

The meeting underscored the council's commitment to reassessing tax structures to ensure they meet community needs effectively.
