Community leaders demand transparency in restorative justice funding

During a recent government meeting, representatives from Allianzcochoveli's Community Justice Campaign emphasized the importance of restorative justice (RJ) practices in local schools, urging the district to prioritize transparency and accountability in funding and implementation. Brandon Nuneo, a spokesperson for the campaign, expressed gratitude for the inclusion of restorative justice in the 2023-2024 Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) and highlighted the need for a shift from punitive discipline to community-focused interventions.

Nuneo called for the district to provide clear information on how funds allocated for restorative justice are being spent, rather than grouping them with other budget items. This request aims to enhance transparency and ensure that the district is responsive to community needs. He also urged the district to share its RJ implementation plan and the metrics used to measure its effectiveness across schools.

Olivia Rodriguez Mendez, a program manager at the Youth Leadership Institute and fellow campaign member, echoed these sentiments, advocating for a comprehensive and transparent RJ implementation plan. She requested a publicly available report detailing RJ activities, successes, and areas needing support, along with regular evaluations to assess the impact of these practices.

Both speakers emphasized that a distinct line item for restorative justice in the district budget would allow community members to track resource allocation effectively. They argued that continuous monitoring and data-driven approaches are essential for refining strategies and maximizing the benefits of restorative justice for students and the broader community.
