Commissioners unite to deny controversial cell tower application

In a recent government meeting, city commissioners unanimously voted to deny an application for a new cell tower, emphasizing adherence to the established 5,000-foot rule designed to prevent multiple towers from being too close together. Commissioner Dalton highlighted the importance of this regulation, stating that it serves the visual benefit of the community.

The discussion centered around the necessity of the proposed tower, with several commissioners expressing skepticism about the need for additional coverage in a predominantly residential area with sparse retail. Commissioner Jenkins noted that previous applications had been supported by compelling evidence of dropped calls and high-density populations, which were not present in this case.

Commissioner Abel echoed these sentiments, pointing out that the application lacked sufficient justification for deviating from the city’s established guidelines. The commissioners collectively agreed that the case for the tower had not been adequately made, leading to the motion to deny the application, which passed without opposition.

Additionally, the meeting included a motion to postpone consideration of another application from Delta Engineers Inc. for an amendment to a plan development district, rescheduling it for July 8, 2024. This motion also passed unanimously, concluding the meeting's agenda.
