Seniors demand urgent action on housing neglect and safety

Residents of Grand Family Apartments voiced urgent concerns during a recent government meeting, highlighting significant issues related to maintenance and rising rents. Multiple tenants reported that the complex, which primarily houses low-income seniors, is struggling with inadequate maintenance services, citing only one maintenance worker available for nearly 200 units.

One resident expressed distress over a rent increase of $427, questioning the rationale behind raising rents in a low-income housing program. She emphasized the need for better care of the apartments and support for residents, particularly those with health issues. Another tenant echoed these sentiments, stating that maintenance requests, such as a broken sink reported in March, remain unresolved months later.

Security concerns were also raised, with residents reporting incidents of car break-ins and unsafe encounters with aggressive dogs in the vicinity. One speaker recounted a frightening experience that left her feeling vulnerable and unsupported by the management.

City officials responded by assuring residents that they would connect them with neighborhood services and landlord-tenant support to address their grievances. Council members expressed their commitment to follow up on these issues, emphasizing the need for improved living conditions for the senior community at Grand Family Apartments.
