In a recent government meeting, city officials discussed the revitalization of the old fire station located south of Hance Park in Phoenix, which has remained largely unused since its closure in the early 1970s. The building, originally Fire Station Number 4, has been the subject of multiple unsuccessful requests for proposals (RFPs) over the years, with previous submissions failing to meet the city's expectations.
City representatives expressed enthusiasm over a new proposal from the local Pool House Group, which aims to transform the site into a full-service restaurant. This initiative is part of a broader master plan to enhance Hance Park and activate the surrounding area. The proposed restaurant will feature both indoor and outdoor dining spaces, directly accessible from the park, while preserving the building's historic character.
The RFP process, initiated in July 2022, attracted significant interest, with notifications sent to over 800 contacts, including local chambers of commerce. However, only one proposal was received, which was thoroughly evaluated to ensure it met the city's minimum qualifications.
The lease agreement for the property has been approved by the Parks Board, with terms including an annual lease rate of approximately $129,000, a 3% annual increase, and a 15-year initial term with options for three five-year extensions. The project will also utilize 90% small business suppliers and includes funding for necessary infrastructure improvements to prepare the building for its new use.
City officials are optimistic that this project will not only breathe new life into the historic structure but also contribute positively to the community and the overall vision for Hance Park.
