Milwaukee leaders unite to transform education landscape

In a recent meeting of the Charter School Review Committee, members shared their backgrounds and perspectives on enhancing educational outcomes in Milwaukee. Katina Hartwell Young, a Milwaukee native and community organizer, highlighted her extensive experience in education, particularly her role in establishing charter schools in the 1990s. Currently, she works with the Greater Milwaukee Foundation on initiatives aimed at improving early childhood and high school education.

Desiree, a professor at Alverno College with over 30 years of teaching experience, emphasized the importance of assessment data in education. She advocates for a comprehensive approach to evaluating student outcomes, including family surveys and teacher retention metrics, to ensure all children achieve desired educational results.

Ray Hill, executive director of the King Drive Business Improvement District, brought a community development perspective, focusing on the integration of schools within their neighborhoods and the importance of commercial vibrancy for educational success. He has served on the committee since 2019 and aims to leverage his real estate background to support educational infrastructure.

The meeting concluded with a warm welcome to new members, including the newly sworn-in comptroller, who expressed eagerness to contribute to the committee's financial oversight. The discussions underscored a collective commitment to fostering educational pathways that empower Milwaukee's youth.
