Kettering schools secure vital funding for mental health services

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the continuation of a vital partnership between South Community, the City of Kettering, and Kettering City Schools aimed at providing behavioral health and drug and alcohol counseling services within local schools. The proposed agreement for the 2024-2025 school year outlines that the city will cover 75% of the cost for one full-time counselor and 50% for a second, totaling $122,902. This cost is set to increase by 2.5% annually, with a 1% increase in the subsequent years.

Superintendent McCarty Stewart expressed gratitude for the longstanding collaboration, highlighting its impact on the mental health of 720 students. The partnership has reportedly improved student well-being, accessibility to care, and academic performance, while also fostering emotional resilience and social skills.

Additionally, the city plans to apply for funding from the Ohio Public Works Commission for the Southern Boulevard Improvement Project, which includes replacing curbs and resurfacing roads. If successful, the project could commence as early as July next year.

Lastly, the city is preparing to submit its 2024 annual action plan to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to secure approximately $1.2 million in community development block grant funds, as requested by the Planning and Development Department.
