988 crisis line usage surges amid mental health concerns

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the effectiveness of the 988 crisis hotline, which serves as a national suicide prevention and mental health crisis line. Commissioner Hughes highlighted that 988 calls are routed to emergency services when imminent life threats are detected, with local authorities in Santa Fe managing these calls effectively.

In 2023, the Santa Fe area processed 45 988 calls, and from January to August 2024, that number surged to 95, indicating growing public awareness and utilization of the service. This increase suggests that the hotline is playing a crucial role in expediting emergency responses for individuals in crisis.

However, concerns were raised regarding the hotline's intended purpose of diverting individuals with mental health issues away from incarceration. One participant noted that despite the rollout of 988, there remains a significant number of individuals with mental health concerns being taken to correctional facilities rather than receiving appropriate mental health support. This observation prompted a call for deeper discussions on the effectiveness of the 988 system in achieving its goals of reducing incarceration rates for those experiencing mental health crises.
